An all-tile swimming pool is unquestionably a premium investment. The materials cost more, installation is labor-intensive, and the craftsmanship required is considerably greater than with conventional plaster or exposed-aggregate finishes.
But there is another side to that investment: longevity.
A properly constructed ceramic mosaic tile finish can last for decades and, with appropriate care, potentially for the lifetime of the pool. Rather than periodically removing and replacing an aging plaster surface, a well-installed tiled pool can retain its beauty year after year.
At The Green Scene, our Garden Artisans approach pool tile as a permanent architectural finish. Proper waterproofing, substrate preparation, setting materials, movement joints, grouting, detailing, and installation technique are every bit as important as selecting the tile itself.
Color That Doesn't Grow Old
One of our favorite characteristics of glazed ceramic mosaic tile is the depth and permanence of its color.
Deep blues, aquamarines, cobalt, turquoise, emerald, charcoal, and other rich colors can transform a swimming pool into a piece of jewelry in the landscape. Sunlight reflects differently across hundreds or thousands of individual tiles, giving the water tremendous depth and movement.
Unlike many cementitious finishes that naturally change appearance and fade as they age, a high-quality glazed ceramic surface maintains its color remarkably well. The color is in the fired glaze rather than dependent upon the appearance of a cement-based pool finish.
That makes ceramic tile particularly appealing when we are designing dramatic dark pools, brilliant blue water, intricate mosaics, decorative borders, murals, or other highly customized aquatic environments.
Nothing Feels Quite Like Tile
Then there is the way tile feels.
A beautifully installed ceramic mosaic surface is exceptionally smooth and luxurious underfoot. In a spa, where you are sitting directly against the walls, benches, steps, and floor, that tactile quality becomes even more noticeable.
Just upgrading the spa alone can really be a nice touch.
And yes, we’ll say what everyone else is thinking: if you happen to enjoy an occasional late-night skinny dip, an all-tile spa feels fantastic…. especially after the kids have gone to sleep, if you catch my drift.
There are no coarse aggregates rubbing against your skin. Just smooth, warm ceramic tile and water.

Why We Prefer Ceramic Mosaic Tile
At The Green Scene, we particularly enjoy working with quality ceramic mosaics.
Ceramic pool tile has a long history of successful use in swimming pools and spas. Properly manufactured glazed ceramic tile provides a dense, durable surface that performs well when exposed to properly maintained swimming pool water and normal pool chemistry.
It is relatively easy to clean, resistant to staining, comfortable against the skin, and available in an extraordinary variety of colors, shapes, patterns, and finishes.
And because mosaics use smaller individual pieces, they conform beautifully to the curves, benches, steps, radiuses, fountains, spillways, and sculptural shapes that frequently appear in our custom designs.
A Word About Glass Tile
Glass tile can certainly be spectacular, and there are some beautiful glass products available. However, based upon our experience, we generally prefer ceramic mosaics for extensive underwater installations.
Glass tile requires particularly careful product selection and installation. Certain products and applications can be more susceptible to installation difficulties, scratching, cracking, chipping, annealing failures, and maintenance concerns. The reflective surface that makes glass so dramatic can also make imperfections and damage more noticeable.
For those reasons, when our goal is to create an elegant finish intended to perform beautifully for many years, glazed ceramic mosaic is often our first choice.
