Dive Into the Details Before You Dig!

Remember those old-school backyard pools that started at a 3-foot shallow end and quickly dropped off to an 8-foot deep end with a diving board perched proudly over it? I grew up with one of those. And let me tell you, the things we did off that diving board were equal parts daring, dangerous, and downright stupid. These days, I steer my clients away from diving boards—not just to protect their bones, but to protect them, and us from the liability, too.

Modern Pools Are Built Smarter, Not Deeper

The truth is, the classic deep-end pool has fallen out of favor—and for good reason. Deeper pools cost more to build, require more water and chemicals, and are harder to keep heated. And funny enough, the “scary deep end” doesn’t even get used much. Most swimmers—especially kids—tend to stay where they can comfortably stand. It’s no surprise, then, that modern pool designs are all about maximizing shallow zones and making the entire pool a place to play, lounge, and entertain.

Today’s backyard pools are about lifestyle, not just laps. Think of tanning ledges you can sunbathe on, swim-up bars for cocktail hour, in-pool margarita tables, and sport pool layouts perfect for endless family fun. But before you make a splash, it helps to learn the lingo—especially when it comes to choosing the right depth for your new or remodeled pool. After all, your head sticks about a foot out of the water when standing, so a 6-foot-tall person in 5 feet of water is fine… but if you’re 5’2″, you might be gasping for air.

Let’s dive into some of the most popular modern pool features—and the depths that make them work best.

Sport Pool Layouts: Shallow on Both Ends, Party in the Middle

A sport pool is a modern twist that’s perfect for families, entertainers, and weekend warriors. It’s designed with shallow zones (usually 3 to 4 feet deep) on both ends, with a gradual slope to a center depth of around 5 feet. This layout is ideal for games like water volleyball or basketball, where you want people playing from both sides. And because sport pools are generally shallower overall, they’re easier to heat, filter, and maintain—which saves money and energy in the long run. Want to see one in action?

Lap Pools: Fitness Meets Functionality

If you’re more into fitness than floating, a lap pool might be your speed. These streamlined pools are built for swimming laps and typically need to be at least 3 ½ feet deep to accommodate safe underwater flip turns. In official competitions, each swim lane is about 8 feet wide—so that’s our minimum recommendation. If you want to race a partner, you’ll need at least 16 feet of width. Some homeowners add rope hooks in the walls so they can install floating lane markers for training. Others prefer a clean black tile lap line down the pool floor to help them stay in their lane—literally. Length can vary depending on your yard, but the goal is uninterrupted swim strokes.

Baja Shelf (a.k.a. Sun Shelf, Tanning Ledge, Not “Shamu Shelf”)

No modern pool is complete without a Baja shelf—also known as a tanning ledge or sun shelf. (Although I once saw a company calling it a “Shamu Shelf.” I don’t know any woman in a bikini who wants to lay out on something named after a giant killer whale, but hey, to each their own.) These shallow ledges range from 6 inches to 18 inches deep, but most in-water loungers require no more than 16 inches of water. For comfort, we recommend the “Deep Chaise” from Ledge Lounger, which works best in 14 to 16 inches of water.

Everyone loves the Baja shelf—it’s perfect for toddlers to splash, parents to sip and relax, and seniors to stay warm while dipping their toes. It brings the resort vibe right into your backyard. For young families, we often include float ropes with wall hooks to define the edge of the shelf and give little swimmers a clear boundary. Trust me—this is a feature your whole crew will appreciate.

Beach Entry

The beach entry used to be a wow-factor feature, slowly sloping into the pool like a natural shoreline. But lately, it’s been overshadowed by the more compact and practical Baja shelf. Beach entries take up a ton of real estate and tend to attract uninvited guests—birds, bees, and curious critters at the waters edge. Plus, most people would rather stretch out on a flat lounger than recline at an awkward angle in a few inches of water. That said, it’s still an elegant look, and if it’s your dream, we can absolutely build it.

In-Pool Tables: Bring the Resort Vibe Home

If you’ve ever sipped a drink in a resort pool without having to get out and dry off, you know the joy of a built-in pool table. These cast concrete tables create a hub for in-water entertainment—drinks, games, and even late-night fire conversations. Add an umbrella for shade and ambiance, and you’ve got your own private swim-up lounge. We’ve built custom in-pool tables for everything from chess games to cocktails to warming up beside a built-in fire feature.
