December
Our Elegant Water Park Backyard project was one of Zillow’s “Top 6 Digs” for the week ending Dec. 5
This Los Angeles home was just built, with only a dirt yard in place when we first arrived. Now this family has it all: an L shaped award winning swimming pool with a spa, Baja shelf, deck jets, water features, and a huge water slide. Adjacent to the spa is a fire pit with built in seating. A concrete faux wood bridge crosses the slide and leads from the fire pit area to the top of the slide. Beautiful tile accents and lighting complete this amazing project.
Our Mediterranean Splash Cast Concrete Counter
won a Concrete Surfaces Concrete Polishing
Award from Hanley Wood
“This outdoor kitchen has a tiled backsplash and two cast-in-place concrete countertops designed for convenient cooking by Scott Cohen of Green Scene Landscaping & Pools—with food preparation and cooking on the grill side, and dual serving levels on the bar side. The counters were embedded with recycled glass chips and fiber optic lights and then polished with granite finishing tools. At night the soft glow is subtle and romantic. “
Two of our projects were featured in an article in Pool and Spa News about creating pleasant surroundings for hot tubs. In the pictured projects, we built cast concrete counters around the spa to create a swim up bar, accessible by either side of the counter.

Our Multi-Tiered Stone and Tile Backyard Retreat is featured in Landscape Contractor’s
Tiers of Enjoyment
Scott Cohen is the author of nine books about landscaping; has been featured on many national television shows including “Cool Pools,” and “Get Out, Way Out!” on HGTV; does professional seminars, training sessions and speaking engagements; and as long time member of the Expert Witness and Industry Expert with the California Contractors State License Board, regularly serves as a mediator and testifies in cases of alleged outdoor construction defects; yet still finds time to be very hands-on with his landscape company’s projects.
Case in point is this backyard remodel in Tarzana, Calif. Over the course of six months plus, Cohen’s direct involvement in the design and build helped turn a lacking landscape into a rich backyard retreat with multiple tiers. Read More

One of the big trends right now is converting to saltwater. Although it can be great for the body and save money (salt is less expensive than chlorine), Scott Cohen of Green Scene Landscaping and Pools says he generally prefers ozonator or traditional chlorine-dependent systems.
“I have come across many pools where the concrete, coping, stone and brick work have been severely damaged from continuous exposure to saltwater. In waterfalls, in areas where bathers enter and exit the pool regularly, or any portion of the hardscape that gets wet and then dry, the saltwater leaves behind minerals in the hardscape materials. Over time those minerals grow (remember Moon Rocks?) and can damage or prematurely dissolve the hardscape around a pool.” Read More

Concrete Décor published our Ultimate Backyard Hacienda Resort project with a very nice article by Stacey Enesey Klemenc in their April issue.
“Looking at it today, it’s hard to imagine the focal point of this family’s backyard used to be a $300 above-ground swimming pool from Walmart. Now, the award-winning residential resort is more in line with the likes of Neiman Marcus with its outdoor kitchen, waterslide, conversation area with fire pit, and a concrete swimming pool and spa with a Baja shelf, two in-pool tables and a shaded pavilion.
Designed and built by Scott Cohen, owner of Green Scene Landscaping and Swimming Pools in Chatsworth, Calif., the “staycation” resort only retained one element from the previous backyard expanse: a wooden pergola at the back of the property, something Cohen thought was too small for the massive makeover. The Spring issue of USA Today’s Home Magazine features a Green Scene project and helpful tips from Scott Cohen.
“The biggest trend in outdoor home improvement is breaking up backyards into outdoor rooms and creating different areas for entertaining,” says Scott Cohen, author of Scott Cohen’s Outdoor Kitchen Design Workbook and a frequent contributor to HGTV shows. “The star of that, the big focal point, always ends up being the outdoor kitchen. When you think about it, any time you entertain, you just can’t get people out of your indoor kitchen. You can put out appetizers, you can do snacks — people hang out around the food and the booze.”
March
Scott Cohen was interviewed for the March 2014 issue of Lawn and Landscape.
“Water adds another “sense” to the landscape, and the intimate outdoor spaces Scott Cohen designs for clients gain more texture, tranquility and recreational appeal when a pool is involved.
“It’s not just how pools look – but how they sound, and the environments we create by combining water with fire effects, with the reflection of trees and plantings and texture,” says Cohen, owner of The Green Scene in Chatsworth, Calif., and author of nine books, including PoolScapes and The Candid Contractor.”
