A children’s garden planted with love and friendship

Cassandra Cohen (left) poses in front of a plaque dedicated to her friend Alexa, who died of cancer when she was 10. The plaque stands in a memorial garden designed by Cassandra and her father Scott Cohen and installed by volunteers over the weekend of April 28 and 29. It includes a rich, interactive five senses experience. Read more about it in Lawn & Landscape and LandscapeOnline.com

Safety In The Pits in Aqua Magazine explains the potential dangers of commercial and residential fire features. As a contractor and construction expert witness, Scott knows the importance of using the right materials, placing them properly in the fire pit or outdoor fireplace, and installing burners correctly. When it comes to commercial fire features at hotels and restaurants, public safety comes into play and liability if someone gets hurt coming into contact with an incorrectly designed or installed fire feature, or one which is not properly monitored by hotel or restaurant staff. Read all about this in this issue and in Scott Cohen’s Outdoor Fireplaces and Fire Features, available on Amazon.com.

Our Gontmaher project profile was featured in this month’s issue of Concrete Décor. This project, located on a steep slope, required special engineering and the assistance of geologists to build. We added a terrace, large all tile spa, and outdoor kitchen to the back wall of the house, all accessible by stairs leading 7 levels down to the swimming pool area. We updated the old swimming pool with a built in swim-up bar, fountain, and new plaster. Read about this challenging project at ConcreteDecor.net

Calabasas Style showcased two of our projects in an article called 10 Beautiful Backyard Design Ideas. Quoting HGTV’s Beautiful Backyard Designs, they give great tips for vacationing in your own backyard.

April

Landscape Contractor featured one of our most beautiful backyards in an article titled Tropical Lighting Getaway. This property features a tropical style swimming pool with a waterfall that cascades into a spa below, and a water slide that passes through a bridge. Nearby is a cast in place concrete fire pit with a built in concrete seat wall conversation area, adjacent to the concrete bar with embedded glass chips that are lit at night with fiber optic lights. Along one side of the yard, behind the fire pit, is a bocce court covered with vines and climbing roses.

March

Backyard Solutions 2012 featured this Calabasas backyard designed by Scott Cohen and built by the Green Scene. The swimming pool is edged with Elk Mountain stone and has a raised spa and large Baja shelf to allow shallow water relaxation for adults or a place for small children to play. The outdoor kitchen features a custom cast-in-place concrete countertop. Ferns, perennials, and statuary accent this gorgeous and peaceful backyard.

Great Backyards 2012 features 3 Green Scene projects: The Vigo putting green and outdoor kitchen, the Paramesh pond, and the Flynn pond. Also featured on the last page is a writeup of Scott Cohen and Carolyn Doherty’s book, Petscaping (Schiffer Publishing). Find a copy at your local bookstore or grocery store.

In this issue of Landscaping Network magazine, Scott provided industry standard dimensions for barbecue counters and other structures, such as outdoor fireplaces and basketball, bocce, and other game courts. Also the Lundring family backyard remodel is featured in this article called Party House.

Pool and Spa News featured some of our gorgeous perspective drawings in an article called “Drawing the Dream”.

In this article, Scott Cohen talks about the importance of showing the homeowner what a finished project will look like before signing the construction contracts.

“A perspective rendering is absolutely critical, especially for clients who are more visually oriented. Those of us who design spaces are used to working with plot plan or top view drawings, but most homeowners are not draftsmen, engineers, or architects. To sell the yard of their dreams, you have to help them dream of themselves in their yard. So side view drawings are always part of our presentation.” Read the article

Aqua Magazine published an article about Scott Cohen’s career and his company called “Making the Scene”.

For the past 25 years, “garden artisan” Scott Cohen has embraced the challenge of creating beautiful outdoor spaces for residential clients. Starting out his career as a plant expert, Cohen has steadily expanded his repertoire over the years to encompass nearly all of the major elements found in today’s custom exterior settings, a pursuit he explains opens doors, stimulates the mind, and most importantly leads to satisfied clients.

“Last year at the World of Concrete show in Las Vegas, I was presenting a seminar on fire features when a gentleman in the audience raised his hand and asked me, “What are you?” Read the article
