Pickleball Tips from The Green Scene Staff
Pickleball is exploding in popularity — and here at The Green Scene, we’ve seen it firsthand.

We’re designing and building new pickleball courts throughout Porter Ranch, Chatsworth, Simi Valley, and Northridge, turning backyards into family-friendly social hubs that blend fitness, fun, and friendly competition.
But while great court design sets the stage, the real “wow factor” comes from how you play.
To help you up your game, our team collected insights from top national instructors and distilled them into 20 clear, practical tips that will have you thinking, moving, and playing like a Level 5.0 player — even if you’re still learning the ropes.
1. Perfect Your Third Shot (and Know When to Drive or Drop)
Smart players read the return. A high, deep return? Drive and follow it in.
A low, short one? Drop softly into the kitchen. Variety is what wins points.
2. Control the Transition Zone
Don’t get stuck mid-court. Reset calmly, keep the paddle steady, and move forward behind a soft shot.
3. Aim Low — Always
Target your opponents’ feet or backhand hip. Low balls create pop-ups and easy put-aways.
4. Stack Strategically
Stacking isn’t just for pros. Use positioning to highlight your forehand strengths and protect weaker sides.
5. Serve Deep, Return Deep
A powerful, accurate serve and a deep return give you the upper hand early in every rally.
6. Advance Behind Slow Balls
After a good drop or reset, move in. Momentum wins control of the net.
7. Mix Up Your Dinks
Change height, spin, and depth to create opportunities. Dinking is chess, not checkers.
8. Master the Speed-Up and Counter
Keep swings compact and your paddle up. React, don’t over-swing — precision beats power.
9. Learn to Reset Under Pressure
When things get fast, don’t panic. Float the ball back into neutral territory and re-set your defense.
10. Split-Step and Stay Light on Your Feet
Good movement keeps you balanced and ready. Every pro does it instinctively before each contact.
11. Think in Patterns, Not Points
Train sequences — serve/third/fifth or return/fourth/sixth — until they become second nature.
12. Know When Not to Drop
If your opponents are still deep, keep them there. A premature drop only brings them closer to the kitchen.
13. Develop a Reliable Lob and Lob Defense
Add the surprise lob to your arsenal, but be ready to track down and counter one just as fast.
14. Beat the Bangers with Shape
Roll topspin and aim for their feet. The softer you play, the more frustrated “bangers” become.
15. Communicate with Your Partner
Call shots, switch, and celebrate. Clear communication wins close games.
16. Practice with Purpose
Dedicate sessions to specific skills — dinks, resets, serves — instead of just casual games.
17. Record and Review
A short video of your play can reveal footwork errors, paddle angles, and habits you don’t notice in the moment.
18. Stay Mentally Calm
The best players don’t just react — they respond. Breathe between points and reset your mindset.
19. Train for Quickness and Balance
Short bursts, agility drills, and flexibility training translate directly to better reaction time and endurance.
20. Keep It Fun
Remember why you play. Laugh, learn, and keep showing up — the joy of the game fuels lasting improvement.
