The Green Scene News: Summer 2008

Summer's almost here, but now that gasoline prices are over $4/gallon in Southern California, many homeowners are choosing to...that's right: vacation in their own backyard! That's the goal when Scott Cohen designs a landscape, to provide everything your family needs to really relax and enjoy a resort-style yard with every outdoor comfort and amenity available.

A perfect example of this concept is our Kirschner project, which Scott Cohen just won a 2008 Masters of Design Award for, shown above. This amazing property features an all-tile vanishing edge pool and spa, custom iron pavilion dining area, meditation garden, outdoor kitchen and dining room, and an outdoor living room with a fireplace. It will grace the cover of the July 11, 2008 issue of Pool and Spa News. Check out our In The News page to read the many other magazine features we've had this year. And you can buy Tina Skinner's new book, Outdoor Kitchens & Fireplaces, which features 17 Green Scene projects, at our online bookstore.

Also in this issue, If you've been a regular subscriber to our newsletter for awhile, you already know that Scott Cohen designs the most amazing pools and spas, outdoor kitchens, outdoor fireplaces, ponds, waterfalls, and every other kind of custom outdoor living component he can dream up. But do you know how the Green Scene started out? In this issue, we'll let you in on a bit of Green Scene history (and a history of Green Scene newsletters!). We will also update you on our summer HGTV schedule, starting June 13.

A Brief History of
The Green Scene
The Green Scene was founded by Bob Cohen in 1969 in Culver City as a franchised chemical lawn care company. Bob changed the company's name to The Green Scene in 1972 after discontinuing the franchise relationship, and the focus of the business also changed. The Green Scene incorporated in 1974 and evolved into a landscape irrigation, installation, and maintenance company. In 1989, after years of running his own landscaping service and designing pools and landscapes on his own, Scott Cohen left his job as the Regional Manager of the Lawn and Garden Division for Target, and came onboard as Vice President and General Manager. After designing and building his own pool a few years later, Scott became a licensed pool contractor in addition to his previously held landscape and general contractor licenses. In 1996 he took over as President and Supervising Designer. That year marked the beginning of a dramatic change in the design and installation services that The Green Scene would provide.

In just a few years, Scott was designing and building amazing pools and spas and conceiving his own signature recycled wine bottle waterfalls and cast concrete barbecue counters with
inlaid recycled melted bottles, crushed glass, and fiber optic lighting. From martini spas to all tile vanishing edge pools and spas, his unique designs are unmatched in creativity and beauty. Cohen Pool
He has also been an active participant in the Industry Expert Program for the CA Contractors State License Board since 2003, supporting ethical and legal business practices in the landscape construction industry.
